Honoring International Women’s Day

El Centro Hispano proudly joins the Town of Carrboro in recognizing March 8, 2025, as International Women’s Day. During the Carrboro Town Council Meeting on March 4, 2025, Mayor Barbara Foushee officially proclaimed this important day, urging all residents to celebrate the achievements of women, raise awareness about gender-based violence, and advocate for policies that promote equality and justice for all.

At El Centro Hispano, we understand the urgency of addressing gender-based violence in our communities. We stand with the Town of Carrboro in its commitment to fostering a safe and just society for all individuals, regardless of sexual orientation, religion, race, or age. A key part of this commitment is supporting legislative efforts to classify femicide as a distinct crime—ensuring that perpetrators are held accountable and that victims receive the justice they deserve.

Denise Ferrada, representing El Centro Hispano, had the honor of receiving the proclamation on behalf of the Carrboro community. This recognition is a testament to the collective effort needed to address gender-based violence and support survivors.

Recent data from Statista highlights the severity of this crisis: North Carolina had the sixth highest number of homicides of women by men among all U.S. states in 2020. Yet, femicide remains unrecognized as a separate crime from homicide in the U.S., limiting the ability to track, understand, and prevent these murders effectively.

The tragic loss of community leaders like Liliana Concha, a respected businesswoman and volunteer, reminds us of the devastating impact of gender-based violence. Recognizing femicide as a crime is essential—not only for delivering justice but also for improving data collection, research, and prevention efforts.

Mayor Foushee’s proclamation is a crucial step forward. At El Centro Hispano, we will continue to advocate for systemic changes that protect women and all vulnerable populations. We invite our community to join us in this fight for justice and equality.
