El Centro Hispano celebrates the Appointment of Berenice Malagón
El Centro Hispano, the longest-serving Latino organization in North Carolina, is proud to announce and celebrate that Governor Roy Cooper has appointed Berenice Malagón, our Public Relations and Communications Specialist, to the North Carolina Task Force for Racial Equity in Criminal Justice (TREC), composed of 24 members and co-chaired by the Honorable Anita S. Earls Associate Justice, Supreme Court of North Carolina and Eddie Buffaloe, Jr. Secretary, North Carolina Department of Public Safety.
Berenice will be serving in the Local Policy Committee alongside the Honorable Josh Stein Attorney General of North Carolina; the Honorable Mike Hawkins Former Transylvania County Commissioner; the Honorable Kim Scott District Attorney, Prosecutorial District 7; Ms. Deborah Dicks Maxwell President, North Carolina NAACP, New Hanover NAACP; Ms. Tracie Campbell Senior Health Manager, Office of Violence Prevention, Mecklenburg County Public Health, and the Honorable Preston Blakely Major, Fletcher.
This appointment is not only a testament to Berenice’s outstanding professional achievements, but also a recognition of her commitment to advancing racial equity and social justice in our community and beyond. With more than 20 years of experience as an Emmy Award-winning journalist, among others, and social justice advocate, both in Latin America and the United States, Berenice will bring to the table the issues facing marginalized communities, which becomes an invaluable asset to the Working Group.
As an organization dedicated to strengthening and advancing the Hispanic/Latinx community, El Centro Hispano stands ready to collaborate with Berenice and the Task Force to address the systemic injustices within our criminal justice system and work towards a more equitable and just society for all.
