Carrboro Pride Brings the Community Together
El Centro Hispano, in partnership with the Town of Carrboro, proudly celebrated Pride Month by hosting the Carrboro Pride Dance Party/Orgullo, a vibrant community event that brought together families, local leaders, LGBTQ+ advocates, allies, and residents for an evening filled with culture, celebration, and connection.
The Seventh Annual Orgullo Carrboro festivities began with the Carrboro Pride Piper Walk, where participants gathered in solidarity before making their way to a lively celebration featuring live music, cultural performances, dancing, and community engagement. The event reflected the shared commitment of El Centro Hispano and the Town of Carrboro to building inclusive spaces where every individual feels welcomed, respected, and valued.
Mayor Barbara Foushee welcomed attendees by reaffirming Carrboro’s commitment to inclusion. “Our community will always be a place where everyone is welcome. Celebrating Pride means celebrating respect, inclusion, and our shared commitment to building a community where every person feels safe, valued, and like they truly belong.”
Throughout the evening, attendees enjoyed captivating performances by local drag artists Serenity Devine Carter, Gaga La Graga, KiKi Diamond, Alexandra Vittz, Veronica Diamond, and Eli Stone, alongside cultural performances that highlighted the richness of the community. Music and dancing created an energetic atmosphere where people of all ages came together to celebrate authenticity.
Beyond the entertainment, El Centro Hispano’s Mobile Unit provided free health services, including blood pressure screenings, glucose testing, height and weight measurements, and free HIV and STI testing. These services underscore the organization’s commitment to expanding access to culturally responsive healthcare and preventive services for all members of the community.
The celebration also featured remarks from the General Consul of Mexico, who emphasized the importance of supporting LGBTQ+ communities and strengthening partnerships that promote dignity, equity, and inclusion.
“Orgullo is an opportunity to celebrate authenticity, diversity, and the strength of our community,” said Orlando Martínez, Community Specialist at El Centro Hispano. “We are proud to partner with the Town of Carrboro to create spaces where everyone can feel welcomed, safe, and celebrated. The Carrboro Pride Dance Party serves as a reminder that when communities come together, they create stronger, healthier, and more connected neighborhoods for everyone.”
