HB10 is a setback for immigrant rights
We strongly denounce the passing of HB10, a law that undermines the safety, trust, and well-being of immigrant communities across North Carolina. By mandating cooperation with ICE, HB10 prioritizes fear and division over public safety and community cohesion. This legislation will deter undocumented immigrants from reporting crimes or engaging with local law enforcement, leaving families and communities more vulnerable.
āFamilies who contribute to North Carolinaās economy and community will now live under the constant threat of detention and separation. This is a dark day for our state.ā said Pilar Rocha-Goldberg, President & Executive Director of El Centro Hispano. āWe stand united in our commitment to challenge this law and to protect the rights of immigrants in North Carolina.ā
HB10 also raises serious constitutional concerns, with legal experts warning it could face challenges for violating due process and equal protection under the law. Beyond its immediate impact on immigrant families, the law threatens the well-being of public schools, where immigrant families and students build diverse, inclusive learning environments essential for community growth.
